Avoid Tourist Traps

You know, the places where you can’t walk into the local Wal-Mart without being greeted at the entrance by someone desperate to sell you a time share.

Pro-Tip: Say “I’m a local” as soon as they make eye contact.

Talk to the locals

This is key. Do not, I repeat do not, rely on internet for where to go or what to do when you are visiting a new place. Chat up the most eccentric locals you can get your hands on. Mine them for rare information and side quests. You will know them when you see them. Great candidates for this can usually be found at grocery store check-outs, barber shops, nail salons, or skulking around liquor stores and libraries.
